A resume shouldn’t just reflect what work you have done or study you have completed. It should tell a story about who you are. As important as your capabilities and education are, what is equally important is the person you are. Your work ethic, your motivation, your drive and commitment.
If you do not have a strong employment or study background than you need to find other ways to build your professional profile. This involves communicating your personal qualities that are just as important as your credentials. You need to demonstrate to a potential employer that you have the capacity for success.
There are a number of ways to do this. Firstly, you can introduce yourself and describe what motivates you and what’s important to you. Any volunteer work or sports coaching you have participating in also speaks volumes about the kind of person you are. If you have given up your time to raise money or participated in fundraising activities than this at least says that you think about other people besides yourself. This tells a potential employer that you are more likely to be considerate of your colleagues and be more conscientious about helping clients and providing a great level of service.
Also, any extra-circular activities and competitive sports or other competition participation is important to include. This demonstrates a number of things i.e Team skills, motivation, discipline, commitment to achieve and competitive drive. These kind of activities serve to create a picture about the kind of person you are. Giving potential employers an insight into your “employee personality”.
